A Growing Field

A Growing Field talks about a guy named John Christian who is a farmer. He works everyday from seven in the morning to midnight. First he opens up his greenhouse, let’s his chickens out of the henhouse, and waters his plants. He bought his property at Canterbury, Conn. Three years ago to start a organic farm. He hopes that his soil will get richer as he works compost and manure into the land. It takes him time and effort to develop rich soil because organic farmers don’t use synthetic fertilizers. Organic farmers must weed by hand. John grows mostly greens like lettuce, arugula, kale, and bok choy, and flowers. Now he is beginning to specialize in herbs. During the winter, John makes his own soap from dried herbs, olive oil, buttermilk, and honey. He also sells his soap with his produce at farmers market two or three days a week.
