A Growing Field

A Growing Field talks about a guy named John Christian who is a farmer. He works everyday from seven in the morning to midnight. First he opens up his greenhouse, let’s his chickens out of the henhouse, and waters his plants. He bought his property at Canterbury, Conn. Three years ago to start a organic farm. He hopes that his soil will get richer as he works compost and manure into the land. It takes him time and effort to develop rich soil because organic farmers don’t use synthetic fertilizers. Organic farmers must weed by hand. John grows mostly greens like lettuce, arugula, kale, and bok choy, and flowers. Now he is beginning to specialize in herbs. During the winter, John makes his own soap from dried herbs, olive oil, buttermilk, and honey. He also sells his soap with his produce at farmers market two or three days a week.

Caring for the Big Guys

This article is mainly about a veterinarian name Bob Rednour and he runs a large animal veterinary service. He specializes in the care and treatment of large animals because he says that he has a passion for animals health and science. He also says that he likes being outside and working with the animals and that it keeps him in shape. Most of his work involves traveling to farms to treat animals. For example he tries fixing wounds, diagnose diseases, treating sick animals, and even help with difficult births. Bob works for a hundred hours a week. When he first started his job, he only worked from 50 to 60 hours per week. Now Bob takes special care of a mare in the stocks named Tupelo because of injuries from an unsuccessful birthing. He said that the foal developed problems and was stuck in the birth canal and the baby horse died but the mother suffered with some infections. My thoughts about this article is that being a veterinarian is probably a hard job for someone who is very lazy. That’s because I think that their job takes a lot of work taking good care of animals especially the large animals.

You Are What You E-Mail

This article talks about the way you write when you are e-mailing someone. This articles says that misspellings, incomplete sentences, or all lowercase or capital letters can make your message hard to read and can keep you from being taken seriously when you send messages like that to teachers, professors, or employers. E-mails can tell you a lot about the person that writes you, you can tell by the way they write their message. The guy in this article talks about these kind of situations, his name is Regan O’ Brien and he says that e-mail is permanent and can come back to haunt you.

Navigating the College Fair

The subject about this article talks about choosing the right college and how a trip to a college fair can help you make your choice. College fairs is a place where people from different colleges come together to answer questions and give out information about their college. The college representatives come to talk to students in person about what they can get to do and other stuff like that about their college and where its located. Also, maybe even things that you are most interested in. At college fairs, they put up booths and give out information and answers to students. The best way to help you choose your college is to get the best information about the college and do at least some research and see what interest you the most. It’s a good way for you to know about the college before you attend it. You could also fill out cards and stuff like that at booths so they can help you by sending information about a college.

My thoughts about this article is that I think that planning ahead and attending things like college fairs are good ideas for you to choose a right college. Getting enough information and research are also the best ways to choose the right college for you.

Face-Off

This article talks about who will become the next president of the United States and that it is less than two weeks that they will finally choose who will be president. But right now they have three big issues that the United States is going through. One of the issues would be about the economy because banks and many businesses are going short on cash, others would be about U.S troops fighting in wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and that people are worried about how they will fuel their cars and heat their homes in the future. People are going to be thinking about all this as they vote for the future president. They want to know what the future holds for them because they are getting to a point where there getting to a scary time right now. They want to chose a president who won’t make them pay higher taxes and other situations like that. They are also concerned about national security and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Obama wants to end the wars but McCain still wants them to go on until to stop insurgents who are fighting the U.S. troops. Another concern is oil, and oil is used to turn into gasoline to power cars and used to heat homes and oil is beginning to run low because of the wars. In conclusion, the prices of gas and heating oil are going up too.

Prescipion for Success

This article I read about was about a lady named Catherine Newkirk and it told people about how she was influenced towards becoming a pharmacist. When she was small her dad had a serious cut on his foot and Catherine told her dad to go to a doctor but he wasn’t going to be able to afford the doctor’s fee. So they got some advice from their local pharmacist about how to clean the wound. What the pharmacist told them worked and Catherine never forgot the help their community pharmacist provided. Catherine liked seeing how much pharmacist can help people and she wanted to do the same. So that’s what influenced her.

Now Catherine’s job is in a drugstore where she can mix medications and make sure people understand how to take them the right way. She enjoys what she does because she says that she’s able to help many people around her community.

My thoughts about this article is that I really liked reading about how pharmacist can help people. It also influenced me to become a pharmacist myself because I enjoy helping people too and prevent them from dying of flu and stuff like that. It makes me realize what a great career it can be.

Future Fibers

The article Future Fiber talks about how high-tech and technical textile materials that are showing up in all kinds of products. It said that textile engineers designed the fleece fabric to not be heavy but lightweight to trap heat to keep you warm. Also, nowadays, clothing companies now sell shirts and pants that don’t get wrinkles, there making breathable rain gear, and even socks that ward off foot order.

Studying the Tiniest Fibers:
In this section of the article, a lady named Wendy Krause at a University College studied thin molecules called polymers. She said that they are shaped a lot like spaghetti and when you bunch them up in mats that they form textiles. When you use different polymers and sizes of fibers, the mats can solve different problems. Like for example, some can resist heat and chemicals and can be used to make safer firefighter gear or some can resist bacteria.

One thing that caught my eye in this article was that this year a scientist figured out how to include wires in fabric that produced electricity as the fabric moves and that someday people could have clothes that work as a power generator. That was very interesting to read about.

Fly High

This article talks about different kind of pilots and how pilots can be paid for the adventures they undertake in their daily work. Some of the pilots that fly, fly passengers across the country or even around the world, some also fly for the military.

From Student to Teacher:
This part of the article introduced a guy named Barrington Irving and how he become the youngest person to fly solo around the world, and a pilot. At first, he didn’t think he could become a pilot because he thought that he wasn’t smart enough and because where he came from they didn’t fly. But this guy Capt. Gary Robinson a pilot for United Airlines told him that if he can do it so could he. Then, Robinson took Irving to an airport to see the cockpit of a Boeing 777 and that’s when Robinson was hooked on the idea of becoming a pilot. He also took many lessons for flying and practiced it. After a few years after that he earned licenses as a private pilot, a commercial pilot, and a flight instructor.

My thoughts about this article is that it was very interesting to read about, and that being a pilot makes me think that it can be fun and in control of planes and stuff.

Gobs Of Green Jobs

My thoughts about the Green jobs are that many people should be getting more involved with it because it includes protecting the air, water, land, and creatures. Most people enjoy having a clean and a safe environment. So that is why I think more people should get involved with the green jobs. The green workers often promote sustainable ways of utilizing resources. Some examples of the green workers jobs are to make safe water available for communities, manage the way people use forests, so that trees can be harvested to make paper and wood products in a sustainable way, test water, air, and soil for contaminants to keep people and wildlife safe from toxins, and to also find safe environmentally healthy ways to dispose of the waste people create. The workers doing green jobs are trying very hard to reinvent the industries of our society so other people will be satisfied by living to a more comfortable life while protecting the planet. This article was very interesting and in conclusion I also think that it should be read by a lot more people so they can be involved with green jobs to protect our planet…
